Richard Waghorn
Director of Transformation and Technology, RTÉ
Richard is Director of Transformation and Technology, and a member of the Executive Board, at Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) - the public broadcaster in the Republic of Ireland.
Having led the consolidation of RTÉ’s technology business and operations into a single business, Richard is responsible for the strategy and operations of all technology and systems across the company. In addition, Richard is working on a organisation-wide programme of transformation to enable, and support, the delivery of RTÉ’s corporate strategy.
Richard is the product owner of Saorview, the free-to-air DTT platform in Ireland and has led the development of a new internet connected product, Saorview Connect. He is a Board Director of 2rn, RTÉ’s broadcast transmission and communications network company, which provides services for a number of broadcast, telecoms, broadband and IoT customers.
Prior to moving to Ireland in 2012, Richard was the Chief Technology Officer at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) in South Africa, where he led the Technology division; which included all TV and radio facilities and operations in Johannesburg and the provinces, outside broadcasts, IT, distribution and the PMO.
Until 2009, Richard worked at the BBC. As Controller of Distribution he played a key role in the development of the strategy for the UK’s digital switchover programme and oversaw the implementation of the BBC’s distribution and transmission infrastructure to support the delivery of the programme. Richard was a Board Director of Freesat, and in 2002 was the Project Manager for the launch of Freeview.
